Fundo Las Rosas

209 hectares/516 acres; acquired in 2008
Project of Kris and Doug Tompkins
Lakes Region, Chile

In a gorgeous location along the Carretera Austral, eighteen miles south of the volcano-damaged city of Chaitén, Fundo Las Rosas takes its name from the rose and flower garden of its previous owner. Las Rosas underwent a variety of restoration projects to restore the remarkable property to productivity and beauty. Our team has resuscitated the old orchard, which contained some interesting heirloom varieties, and planted a new fruit and nut orchard. A new worm compositing facility provides fertilizer for all operations. This farm will produce fruits and vegetables for the surrounding community as well as to park visitors.

Plans are in the works to establish a rustic yet sophisticated teahouse to cater to tourists traveling the Southern Highway. Through all these changes, the roses remain undisturbed, tended with love by the farm’s current caretakers.
