Estancia Batel

6,388 hectares/15,785 acres, acquired in 2002
Project of Kris and Doug Tompkins
Corrientes Province, Argentina
Property sold in 2007

This estancia was saved from conversion to tree plantations in 2002 when the former owner—the Perez-Companc forestry company—sold off its nearly 275,000 acres of holdings in the Corrientes Province. When Estancia Batel changed hands, we made a sizeable investment to put the ranch infrastructure back into good shape. After five years of careful management, we sold the ranch to an Argentine rancher, who has managed it successfully ever since. Today it is one of the best cattle operations in the province, known for its high-quality subtropical native grasses.
